London SHow coming Up!

COme ALong FOlks!

We’re gearing up for our next London gig which is at St Harmonica’s Blues Club this Friday 12th April and I will be joined by Preben Raunsbjerg on guitar, Neil Bullock on drums and Richard Sadler on bass.

There’s been quite a lot happening over the last 6 months, which has entailed a good few trips back to my hometown of Manchester. Still a great city and it’s been lovely seeing everyone. Thanks for your help and support friends and family. I can’t remember the last time we played in Manchester, hopefully it won’t be too long before we return. I’ve been recently depping with the excellent Cadillac Kings which has been a lot of fun. But this Friday 12 April, I’ll be back with Neil Bullock, Preben Raunsbjerg and Richard Sadler playing our set of original songs and bar room classics, Yes we’ll ‘Play It Loud’ amongst other favourites!

We have fantastic support on Friday night from Trip Wolfe aka James Darby who is a virtuoso harmonica player and a great bloke too!

I released a more acoustic track a couple of months back, but I wasn’t around to make much of a splash about it. The track is called RED GUiTAR and is song in memory of a good friend of mine who passed away. It features myself on acoustic guitar with Preben Raunsbjerg on Electric Guitar and Richard Sadler on Double Bass. Hope you enjoy it.

As you know my heart is in roots music, but that’s not to say a good middle-eight isn’t acceptable from time to time. It’s with this in mind I’ll be putting out a SUMMER SINGLE for ‘The Kids’ this year. It’s called ‘Summers Going To Last’ - so listen out that for that one!

Also, thanks to everyone who came along to The Boogaloo Club in January. It was great to see so many people there and have a chat with everyone. It was a very special gig for me.

Meanwhile ‘Walking Out’ goes from strength to strength and the new episode is below!

Look forward to seeing you all this Friday 12 Apri!

All the best

Liam

Thanks To All For Coming Along!

Great Night...At... The..Pheasantry...Chelsea.

Great Night...At... The..Pheasantry...Chelsea.

Great To See Everyone

L-R Liam Grundy, Preben Raunsbjerg, Neil Bullock and Richard Sadler

Thanks to everyone who came to see us at The Pheasantry Kings Road Chelsea on Sunday 8th October. We had a great night, and it was lovely to meet old friends and new. I’ve been studio-based a lot recently, writing and playing sessions for other people, so playing again with Preben, Richard and Neil was a treat. Of course they did a great job as usual and with their usual good humour. Thanks to Warren and Gina and all the staff at The Pheasantry for making it such a great night.

L-R Liam Grundy, Preben Raunsbjerg, Neil Bullock and Richard Sadler

As for future London dates, we're next playing at The Boogaloo on Archway Road on January 28 2024. It’s the only “Free on Entry’ gig we do, but it’s a special venue and always a lot of fun. It’s a chance to hang around a bit and enjoy a beer and a chat. No bad thing, and a good start to the new year.

Coming up, I’m playing a gig next Wednesday 1st November with Mike Weston King and Preben Raunsbjerg at What’s Cooking in Leytonstone. That should be a good night too!

Talking of cooking, the new Podcast Episode of ‘Walking Out’ features food rather a lot too - amongst other things.

Click below! It’s on Amazon, Audible and Apple etc.too if you hate Spotify.

Had some great feedback about the new single ‘Play It Loud’. We played it live at The Pheasantry for the first time and it got a great response. If you haven’t heard it yet, listen by clicking on the picture below It’s on YouTube too here - ‘Play It Loud’

Look forward to seeing you all very soon,

All the best

SUNDAY OCTOBER 8 GIG!

Sunday...8th October...2023...Chelsea.

London SHow coming Up!

CLICK FOR TICKETS!

We’re gearing up for our next London gig which is at The Pheasantry Kings Road Chelsea on Sunday 8th October and I will be joined by Preben Raunsbjerg on guitar, Neil Bullock on drums and Richard Sadler on bass.

We’ll also be adding our new single ‘Play It Loud’ into the set! It features the above chaps and the usual creative team. We’ll be playing it live for the first time on the night. The track will be released on 8th October - the day of the gig - on all platforms.

Please book tickets beforehand to avoid disappointment - I mean, nobody wants that!

We had a blast playing the last couple of festivals over the summer. The last two were Dunsfest and The Hightide Festival in Twickenham. Thanks to everyone who came along to support us and to Lord Kevin Foster for helping us out on bass. It was great to meet some of you folks for the first time, and renew some old aquaintences too. Talking of which, we came across an excellent band who shared the bill with us The Hornets. See them if you can. They’re really good and play brilliantly.

I’ve been busy producing a couple of projects for some other artists - more about that later and - and doing sessions for folks, both here in the studio and out and about too.

I was reunited with Michael Weston King recently for some gigs and there’s a London gig coming up with him too I believe. There’s also talk of some solo guitar gigs in the offing, which I always enjoy, so if you book a likely venue, please get in touch!

Meanwhile ‘Walking Out’ goes from strength to strength and the new episode is below!

Look forward to seeing you all in Autumn on 8th October!

All the best

Beer In The Morning - New Single!

... 2023...New... SIngle

... 2023...New... SIngle

NEW SINGLE!

Well we’re cracking on with our scheduled single releases!

‘Beer In The Morning’ is the new original track written by Liam Grundy, and like the previous singles, it features Preben Raunsbjerg, Neil Bullock and Richard Sadler. The track started life at Rob Milis’ Left Bank Studio and we mixed it at Chesham Woods Studio. Preben mixed, mastered and co-produced along with myself. The track is a tongue-in-cheek tale of spineless dissipation, so please don’t think we’e endorsing any particular lifestyle choices!

Our next Liam Grundy Band public outing, is at the Hightide Festival Twickenham on the evening of 30 July. More details will be in the Gigs section we get them. We had a great night The Eel Pie Club gig with a full house and we’re really look forward to returning in 2024. Thanks to Warren and Gina for looking after us. The Boogaloo Club gig was great too and we’re back on 28 January 2024. Big thanks to Andrew Hackett.

Starting a new series (3!) of ‘Walking Out’ which is doing really well. It’s available on Audible, Spotify and Apple etc. Catch up on the first two series here…

We were all very sad to hear that Carol Sloman passed away. As you know I had only recently completed work on her album ‘Song Cycle’. Carol was a good friend and a genuinely special talent. she will be very very much missed by us all.

As some of you will know, I worked for some years with Scotty Moore and we played gigs in Europe and the USA. One gig we did in Hamburg, was to celebrate Gibson’s re-issuing of Scotty’s famous Gold Gibson ES295. The gig was promoted by Horst Fascher who Beatles fans will be aware of. It was part of a tour that Scotty was doing with John Barron. Amazingly, on the night, we were joined by Tony Sheridan who The Beatles had backed in Hamburg in the early days. It was Sheridan’s recording of My Bonnie backed by The Beatles that had first alerted Brian Epstein to their existence. I had a few beers and a chat with Tony and he got up and played a few songs with us. He was very nervous to be playing with Scotty. Someone recently sent me a YouTube link of that night. Cafe Seeterrassen Hamburg 10.10.2000.

Tony Sheridan - Vocals/Guitar, John Barron - Backing Vocals, Ian Conningham - Backing Vocals/Acoustic Guitar, Scotty Moore - Electric Guitar, Pete Pritchard - Double Bass, Jim Russell - Drums and Liam Grundy - Piano. An interesting evening and thanks to Pat Foley and Juliet Avery for all their help and support.

Hope you enjoy the new single, and look forward to seeing you on 30th!

All the best

Liam

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

... 2023...News...

... 2023...News...

We’re all back in business!

Last year saw us releasing 4 singles and we are still completing the new album. The new album is taking longer than envisaged, but that’s down to us wanting to get it just right - plus there are some new vinyl options coming on stream which will make pressing and distribution more efficient.

The year is starting with a great gig at The Eel Pie Club 12 January with Preben and Richard as usual and Jason Reay standing in for Neil Bullock on drums. Really looking forward to it.

We’re at The Boogaloo Club on 9 April I believe which will be fun too. We start around 4pm on that one. There are more dates to announce and will let you know about them asap.

Some keen-eared folk will have come across the podcast ‘Walking Out’ which is doing really well. The podcast features Jonathan Holloway and I and it’s a lot of fun, and only 15 minutes. It’s available on Audible, Spotify and Apple etc.

This year sees the release of a new album called ‘Song Cycle’ by Carole Sloman. I was lucky enough to be asked to produce and play on the album, and we recorded it at Hot Tomale Sound. The songs on the album are great and Carol Sings and plays piano beautifully. Richard Sadler played bass, Finn Bradley played trumpet and I was on guitar for a change. We have some gigs pencilled in with Carol and there’ ll appear in the diary too.

On the “Rocking” side of things, I played piano on three tracks of the new Graham Fenton album with Darrel Higham and Pete Pritchard. Graham recorded two of my songs on the album as well - ‘Thank You And Goodnight’ and ‘Anytime (Anytime)’ It’s been really well reviewed and sounds great.

On a nerdy note! I’ve upgraded all the studio software, and we’re now running even more great new reverbs and channel strips. To really push the boat out, I’m playing a great new piano on my live gigs. The new Yamaha CP88 piano. Sounds brilliant to me, but you can judge for yourself, when you come to the next gig!

On a slightly sad note The Musical Shed is closing it’s door for a while. 16th January will be the last show for a while. All the shows are still available however at the above link and the show may come back in the future, but for now The Musical Shed falls silent. There is talk of a new home for The Musical Shed on a brand new station so stay tuned!

Right then!

Here’s to Gigs, New Releases, Podcasts, New Production Projects and - more songs!

Happy New Year!

Have A Great 2023 Folks

Liam

I’m very lucky to have, yet again, great musicians playing on this track with me. Neil Bullock on Drums, Preben Raunsbjerg on Electric Guitar and Richard Sadler on Bass. This time the line-up is augmented by Anto Thistlethwaite (Waterboys, Dylan, Sawdoctors, Slambovian Circus etc.) who’s guesting on mandolins. He does a great job and it’s a pleasure to be working with him again. I had a band in the 80s with a friend of mine and Anto played the sax with us for a while. We’ve shared the odd libation over the years.

Also I’m doing a little gig with Richard Sadler in Teddington UK. Just guitar and bass and it would be great to see you. 21 May! All the details are on my gig page and a poster below!

THIS IS THE WHISKEY TALKING

Really pleased to announce my new single is now out and about!

‘THIS IS THE WHISKEY

TALKING’

The track is part of the new album ‘Chorlton’ which will be available later in the year.

We recorded the backing tracks - yes remember them? - at a little studio in Twickenham (Left Bank) and then continued at my own studio, going on to mix and master with Preben Raunsbjerg at Chesham Woods Studio in Bury.

Preben and myself produced the album - which is called ‘CHORLTON’. We recorded it in a pretty conventional way, approaching it from a live performance aesthetic.

This has worked really well and there’s a great energy to all the tracks

I’m very lucky to have great musicians playing on the track with me. Neil Bullock on Drums, Preben Raunsbjerg on Electric Guitar and Richard Sadler on Bass. It’s great we’re finally underway with releases from the album. There have been a couple of technical studio upgrades/refits etc. which I wanted to complete in order to give the album the best quality possible, but we’re all back on track now! Another single release will be happening in the coming weeks.

I’ll be playing some shows this year and I’ll keep you posted as they go in the book.

Working From Home!

Screen Shot 2021-02-18 at 12.29.03.png

ANYWAY! I finally finished recording the album. I was enjoying the process of making it, and listening to the contributions of everyone and sort of felt I didn’t want to let it go really! Preben Raunsbjerg and I are mixing it now, and we are on course. The album will be a vinyl and download release only, barring a sudden surge in CD interest. It was recorded mostly in my own studio and Left Bank Studios in Twickenham - home of the redoubtable Rob Millis - and features Richard Sadler - Bass, Neil Bullock - Drums, Preben Raunsbjerg - Electric Guitar, and myself on Vocals, Keys and Acoustic Guitar. There are also great contributions from Anthony Thistlethwaite and Steve Rushton. I’ll keep you posted!

What else? Well I’ve been working on a new Theatre show which will hopefully see the light of day when we ALL see the light of day and also writing and recording with other people on their projects here in my studio. Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with. We’re all friends here. On that theme, here’s some music I did recently for Viv Groskop’s podcast We Can Rebuild Her - re-imagining those 70s Cop Shows, 6 Billion Dollar People etc. Great Fun to do.

I’ve been continuing with my Radio Show too of course. In case you don’t know, the show is called ‘Liam Grundy’s Musical Shed’ and goes out every Monday at 19.00 (BST UK).

Well it’s been a while since I did a blog, so do forgive me. Quite a few things went on hold and some other things went ahead, so it was quite a strange time!

I hope all the events of the last few weeks have not been too awful for everyone, but we know it has been quite grim and here’s hoping we can get back to some normality soon. I have now resumed work on the new album which is tentatively entitled ‘Chorlton’ and we should be completing it soon - more news when I get it.

However there IS news about my new Radio Show! It’s happening every week!

NEW MEDIA NEWS

L - R Preben Raunsbjerg, Liam Grundy, Neil Bullock, Richard Sadler

Hi there,

I’m not going to refer to the ‘Unmentionable', so here’s hoping all will be well with everyone soon. Thanks to everyone who came to our last gig at The Oak in Kingston which I thoroughly enjoyed. Lovely to see so many people there and great chatting to everyone.

Sadly I have to share that in recent weeks, the landlord of The Oak Ermir Kuqali, has passed away. He was a really lovely man, and we send our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family.

Obviously things are somewhat quiet right now, but I did a live online gig on Facebook recently which folks enjoyed - despite it being a bit ‘Gremlinesque’. I shall be doing another one in the near future and will let you know when that is happening. Until then here’s a new video of me playing guitar and singing ‘One More Night’ solo.

I’ll be adding a lot more content in the coming weeks.

I now have a Bandcamp page. Yes really!

New Album Progress!

While being confined to barracks, I have been working on my new album, which has been delayed for obvious reasons, but is now back on track. It’s a great a mix of rockers and country-style music. The genre? It might be Americana, Alt.Country or even Country Soul. All I know is, there is a banjo involved at some point - and at least one electric guitar.

EVERY TIME IT RAINS - NEW SINGLE FOR 2020

Every Time Blog Pic.jpg

I have just released the new single for 2020, which you can hear here! It’s called ‘Every Time It Rains’ and features Preben Raunsbjerg on Guitar and Richard Sadler on Bass

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX8Dfk-Z-MY

I wrote the song towards the end of last year and recorded vocals, piano and guide drums at my studio in London. I then went off to do some work in Memphis, and when I got back decided to take it further. Richard overdubbed Bass, I added more vocals and Preben added guitars. We mixed the track in Bury, at Preben’s studio Chesham Woods (Shoals) and it all started to take shape. Preben mixed and mastered the track and it came to life. I’m really pleased with how it sounds, and that’s due in no small measure to Preben and Richard. Preben co-produced and mixed the track with me as well as playing great guitar, and Richard Sadler’s Bass playing is so brilliant in the way it anchors and enhances the whole song. ‘Every Time It Rains’ won’t be on the album I’m now working on, but lots of new stuff will be, and it’s nice to have a stand alone track with which to kick off 2020.

GIG!

I’ve cleared the decks gig-wise mostly, but am doing one gig at The Oak in Kingston on Sunday 8th March 4pm at: (Please always check gig websites before attending)

http://theoakpubkingston.co.uk/index.php/events/

Preben, Richard and Neil Bullock will be with me at The Oak, and I’m really looking forward to it. Some new tracks off the new album played too I wouldn’t wonder

RADIO SHOWS FOR YOUR DIARY!

I’ve got a couple of radio shows coming up in the next few weeks and the single is already hitting playlists. I’m on Brooklands Radio https://www.brooklandsradio.co.uk on February 10 on Alex Nairn’s show 20.00 - 22.00 and allfm radio Manchester https://allfm.org on 2 February 22.00 - 00.00. I’ll be chatting and choosing tracks and maybe playing live too.

Right then! Back to work! All the best and thanks for keeping in touch and listening!

Cheers

Working In Memphis 2019

Crosstown Memphis. Brilliant Place!

Crosstown Memphis. Brilliant Place!

Been a while since I was in Memphis. Christmas 2011 in fact. I was recording some tracks at Sun Studio with Matt Ross-Spang. ‘Christmas in Memphis’ and ‘Anytime (Anytime)’ which appeared on my album Houston. I was first in Memphis around 1986 and loved it straight away. This time I was the guest of Vicki Loveland and Van Duren (www.lovelandduren.com) and it was great to play music with some lovely people who are also remarkable writers and musicians.

Always wanted to visit Ardent Studios ever since I got to hear Big Star, and to record there with Van and Vicki was a real privilege. The songs on their new album are really great and carry on that Memphis tradition of true R n’B with great melodic soul!

Ardent has been home to everyone from Dylan to ZZ Top, Steve Earle and The Stones. It’s a real piece of Memphis history

A studio I’ve always loved the sound of, but never visited is Royal Studios. Established in 1956, it is one of the oldest continuously operated music recording studios in the world.
It is widely known for producer, recording artist and owner, Willie Mitchell, and notable productions of Al Green, Chuck Berry, John Mayer, Buddy Guy, My Morning Jacket, Robert Cray, De La Soul, Otis Rush, Keith Richards, Solomon Burke, The Bo-Keys, Bobby Blue Bland, Ann Peebles, Ike & Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Anthony Hamilton, Rod Stewart, Paul Rodgers, Cody Chesnut as well as the Barnyard and Soul Men soundtracks. Bruno Mars’s Uptown Funk was recorded there too.

Boo Mitchell is Willie Mitchell’s son, and thanks to Vicki and Van, I had a chat with him and a look around the studio. It’s pretty much as it always was! What a place!

Great to meet up with J. M. and Deborah Van Eaton again, and chat about….music, rock n’ roll and recording studios! J.M. played drums with Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, Charlie Feathers, Bill Justis, and Ray Smith. A Memphis and World Legend.

New Album for early 2020

The much promised new album began work this Autumn. I’m always working on new songs but couldn’t decide what to include on this album. I’ve tried to go for songs that would best showcase the great talents of the chaps in the band. Neil Bullock on Drums, Preben Raunsbjerg on Guitar and Richard Sadler on Bass. I have to say I think it’s very much on track. A real band album.

Once we’d managed to find dates when we were all available, we assembled at a studio on the banks of a river in Twickenham south west London run by a friend of ours Rob Millis.

Once we’d had a good discussion about biscuits, we sprung into action and started working on the drum sound and making ourselves at home. We used a great Ludwig kit which Neil augmented, and soon we were on our way!

Richard Sadler strapped on his ‘74 Precision, and before we knew it, things were shaping up nicely. We were hoping to walk out of there after a few days with great rhythm tracks and some keys and guitar too if possible. Preben was main engineer on the sessions and although nothing escaped his critical but kindly ears, it all seemed to go really well.

So it all looks like we’re in good shape - (music-wise obviously). Thanks to Rob for hosting us so brilliantly. The studio sounds really great!

All about Van Duren!

Van Duren.

Van Duren.

A couple of years ago I came across Memphis-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Van Duren. Van and I got in touch, and it seemed we had a lot of music in common. Van told me a film was being made about his life, and just recently it was completed and released.

The film is called ‘Waiting - The Van Duren Story” by Greg Carey and Wade Jackson

Official trailer:

I was lucky enough to attend the London screening back in March and really loved the film. The music is a revelation. Van Duren’s music is an undiscovered wonder, and I was very pleased to get to meet Van and his musical partner Vicki Loveland. We had a great evening playing tunes and singing. Vicki’s voice is fabulous. Van and Vicki then went off on an extensive Australian tour which was a great success. Hopefully we’ll be doing some work together in the future.

Van’s been working in Memphis all his life, and collaborating with other fantastic musicians which has resulted in him releasing 12 CDs. They’re all available online. Van and Vicki Loveland’s new album NEXT is available now through:

Shakin' Stevens European Tour 2019

I was very happy to be asked to join the Shakin Stevens ‘Greatest Hits And More’ 2019 European Tour on keyboards earlier in the year. We played several gigs in Germany, Poland, Czech Republic,Holland, Switzerland and Austria and bumped into lots of old friends on the way like my old pal Jurgen who I knew from my days doing gigs round London in the 80s.

Shaky has continued to record and perform since his first big run of hits. He was the biggest-selling artist throughout the 1980s and still retains his worldwide following today. Over the years, his bands have been brilliant and included legendary musicians such as Geraint Watkins, Micky Gee, Dave Edmunds, Albert Lee, and Daryl Higham amongst others. This band was no exception and was really excellent. All the musicians and crew were fantastic and great fun too.

Shaky was on great form onstage and off, reworking a lot of his big hits for his audience. He has an incredible attention to detail and doesn’t just go through the motions. His extensive knowledge and love of a wide range of music has sustained his career . All the audiences were great and really enthusiastic

NEW SINGLE!

NEW SINGLE!

This is my latest single ‘No Girl In Tennessee’. It features Preben Raunsbjerg on Guitar and Richard Sadler on Bass. I recorded it at Hot Tomale Recording and it’s available on Spotify and iTunes. It was mixed and mastered at Chesham Woods Studio by Preben Raunsbjerg. I have one more track to release - which will be happening in the next few weeks,, then I start work on a new album.

We’re a bit light on gigs at the moment due to the amount of projects we’ve all got slated, but we have plans in place after the new album is recorded and released so we’ll get a chance to get out and about!

Hope to see you at a gig soon!

2019 Start Here......

Happy New Year to Everyone!

Our venue for ’The Rockford File’, performed by myself and Jonathan Holloway. Jonathan and I co-wrote the show with our director Giles Croft.

Our venue for ’The Rockford File’, performed by myself and Jonathan Holloway. Jonathan and I co-wrote the show with our director Giles Croft.

The Summer of 2018 was mostly spent writing, rehearsing and performing a show at The Edinburgh Festival as well as doing several previews in London theatres. It was some years since I’d performed at the festival. The last time being in 1990- I think - when John Otway and myself did a show at The Assembly Rooms for a week. I remember on one gig falling off his shoulders whilst playing the guitar, and being unable to move the right side of my body for a few hours. It was a bit worrying for a while until I was ale to walk again, but you’ve got to expect that sort of thing when you’re creating great art.

This time the show was a play with music based around a couple of blokes trying to do something constructive with their lives - like robbing a venue at The Edinburgh Festival in fact. I wrote some songs for the show and it went really well.

I’m presently working on another show for the Edinburgh Festival in 2020.

Played some great gigs with some wonderful musicians in 2018. Pete Pritchard, Preben Raunsbjerg, Neil Bullock, Richard Sadler, Martin Belmont, Kevin Foster, Alan Cook, Eric Ranzoni, Jimmy Russell to name but a few, and I once more rejoined My Darling Clementine for some London dates. I did quite a few online sessions too which I really enjoy doing, and finished off an album project in my studio with a good friend of mine Colin Little, I also completed a couple of new tracks of my own.

I think 2019 will be interesting for lots of reasons!

Cheers

Time Marches On

Just a quick reminder for our gig at Queens Theatre Hornchurch on 23rd April..Yes it's a Monday night and St George's Day too (To Book Click Here). We'll be playing stuff a little more bluesy and New Orleansy this time around. Some Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino and a little Dr John etc. as well as Bobby Charles of course - we'll allow Abbeville Louisiana!

I'm writing some new material for our Edinburgh Festival show, 'Badback Mountain - The Rockford Files' which a lot of people came to see during our week's run in London in January. Thanks to all who came along. Our venue at the festival has been confirmed as the Jack Dome at The Pleasance Dome. Our show starts at 14.50 which leaves plenty of time before and after for whatever else takes your fancy! I will post a link for ticket sales as soon as they become available.

Cheers!

After The Show...

Thanks to everyone who came to The Omnibus Theatre for my show 'The Rockford Files'. It was great working with Jonathan Holloway and Giles Croft. We had a lot of laughs. It was a great week and lovely to see so many familiar faces, as well as new audience members. The telecasters got an outing, which I hope they enjoyed, I know I did!

For the rest of the year, I'll be working hard in the studio on a new album, and working on some recordings for other folk. I've been exchanging audio files back and forth for various projects, so I have put tracks on recordings without needing to leave the grounds. Cuts down on the mileage!

There are some more shows coming up and I will post these as soon as they are confirmed. My gig at The Queens Theatre Hornchurch on 23 April 2018 will feature Richard Sadler - Double Bass, Preben Raunsbjerg - Guitar, Martin Belmont - Guitar and Neil Bullock - Drums. Really looking forward to it! See you there!
